Heat
For the most part, the VAIO F Series never became uncomfortably hot. After VGP-BPS13 15 minutes of streaming a Hulu video at full screen, we measured temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit on the underside of the notebook, 97 VGP-BPS13A/B degrees in the center of the keyboard, and 98 degrees on the touchpad. (While temperatures in the 90s are warm, we don’t become concerned until they break 100 degrees.) On the bottom of the notebook—near the vents on the left side—we measured VGP-BPS9/S temps of 110 degrees.

The biggest touch of style is the fancy ThinkPad logo that appears on both the lid and deck; VGP-BPS22A it features a bright red light that stays solid when the notebook is on but blinks when it is asleep.

At 13.5 x 9.2 x 1.3 inches and 5 pounds VGP-BPS22 (with the standard six-cell battery), the Edge 14 is no ultraportable, but it compares favorably to other 14-inch small business notebooks like the T410 (5.2 pounds), the Dell Latitude E5400 (5.6 pounds), and the HP ProBook 4510s (5.7 pounds). We were able to carry VGP-BPS9/B both the laptop and a giant pile of books with us back and forth from work on a couple of occasions without breaking VGP-BPS9A/B a sweat.

Lenovo ThinkPads have long been famous for their incredibly responsive keyboards. However, VGP-BPS9 the new Edge series has a spill-resistant island-style keyboard with a level of tactile feedback that makes it a touch typist’s dream machine, VGP-BPS8 offering perhaps the best typing experience we’ve ever had on a notebook. Using the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor test, we were able to score 86 words per minute with a 1-percent error rate on our first attempt. That score matches this reviewer’s VGP-BPS8A all-time high.

With the ThinkPad Edge 14, Lenovo has taken its small business offering to a new level, VGP-BPS2 with more power and typing comfort than its 13-inch sibling, the Edge 13. This $699 notebook offers strong Core i3 performance, solid VGP-BPS2A endurance, stylish looks, and an amazing keyboard, all at a price that even a struggling startup can afford.

Design
Like the Edge 13, the Edge 14 has a different aesthetic than traditional ThinkPads. You can take your pick from three VGP-BPS2B different lid colors: Midnight Black matte (our configuration), Midnight Black glossy, and Heatwave Red. The sides have a silver trim, which adds VGP-BPS2C a touch of style, but would be even more attractive if it were metal rather than plastic. The rest of the notebook—its deck, bezel, and bottom—VGP-BPS13A/S are made out of smooth black plastic that looks and feels sleeker than the grainy plastic found on other ThinkPads.

Go big or go home. That's the mantra of the HP Envy 17 3D. This large but stylish desktop replacement features an Intel Core i7 VGP-BPS13A/Q processor, powerful ATI graphics, a 3D-capable, full HD display, and a Blu-ray player. Starting at $1,599 ($1,649 as configured), the VGP-BPS13/B 3D version of the notebook costs the same as a similarly equipped non-3D version we reviewed just three months ago. Sounds like a sweet deal. But VGP-BPS13B/B how does this machine stack up to laptops powered by Nvidia's 3D Vision technology? And is there enough 3D content to make donning those glasses worth the trouble? Our in-depth review VGP-BPS13B/Q reveals all.

Editor's Note: Portions of this review were taken from our earlier review VGP-BPS13/Q of the HP Envy 17.

The Envy 17 3D has a large 4.2 x 2.5-inch touchpad VGP-BPS21A/B which doubles as a clickable button. Although we've given HP's touchpads much flack in the past for being either jumpy or having too much friction, the Envy 17 3D's was easier to use. Occasionally, the cursor jumped slightly--it's worse for those VGP-BPS21/S who use two hands--but for the most part we had little problem moving the cursor to specific spots on the screen. The integrated touch buttons VGP-BPS21 were always easy to press.

While the Envy 17 we reviewed in September VGP-BPS21A stayed relatively cool, we noticed much warmer temperatures on the Envy 17 3D. After playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad stayed a chilly 84 degrees Fahrenheit, but the space between the G and H keys was a very warm 105 VGP-BPS21B degrees, and the middle of the underside was 100 degrees.

The left side of the Envy 17 3D is the real trouble area. We can accept a fan that blows good battery 120-degree air. But after we played Call of Duty for 10 minutes, the left Shift and Caps Lock keys were a blazing 125 degrees. That's apple battery disturbing.

Design
The Envy 17 3D shares the same minimalist-chic design as the smaller Envy 14, including a rock-apple battery solid taupe chassis made of aluminum and magnesium. A few touches, such as a paisley-esque pattern of raised bumps on the lid and saus akkus palm rest and HP's glowing logo on the lid, mark this as a premium laptop. Between the machine's durable feel and details such as quiet keys (more on that later), the Envy 17 3D feels like a luxury toshiba akkus laptop.

At 7.5 pounds, the Envy 17 3D is a reasonable weight for a notebook this size, but you ibm akkus likely won't carry it often (and then, you'll need the AC adapter, as you'll see in the battery section). With a maximum height of 1.5 inches, the Envy ibm akkus 17 3D also feels thick, especially compared to Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro, which is just 0.98 inches.

The Envy 17 3D has a chiclet-style keyboard and number pad that stretch across the 16-inch chassis. On the dell akkus Ten Thumbs Typing Test, we typed at a fast rate of 94 words per minute, even with little practice on the keyboard. In addition to the keyboard's backlighting, we apple akkus like that the keys have a soft finish and make little noise when you type. We also appreciate that you don't have to press the Fn key to access media acer akkus controls in the function row of keys.

Display and Sound
For the non-3D version of the Envy 17, HP offers a BrightView Infinity display, ibm akku which has a 1600 x 900 resolution, standard viewing angles, and a 60-percent color gamut. However, the 3D comes with a higher-res Ultra BrightView Infinity sony akku display, which has 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution, wide viewing angles, a 72-percent color gamut, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The notebook also packs ATI's Eyefinity multi-display technology, which lets users connect up to three external monitors, toshiba akku provided one is attached via mini DisplayPort.

When it comes to big-screen notebooks packing Intel’s blazing Core i7 processor, Sony is dell akku definitely playing catch-up with the rest of the field. But the VAIO F Series ($1,719) proves that there’s nothing wrong with being late to the party: saus akku this 16.4-incher sports a full HD display, Blu-ray player, and discrete graphics. Sony also includes an innovative technology called TransferJet, which allows users to move photos from select cameras by merely placing them on the laptop’s palm rest acer akku (albeit with added cost and time). This multimedia machine has some drawbacks, but when it comes to performance, the F Series is one of the best Core i7 hp akku notebooks around.

Design
Although the VAIO F has clean lines, the overall look apple akku almost feels too safe. The notebook has an understated matte lid embossed with the VAIO logo, and a matching chassis underneath, complete with a subtly textured palm rest. In the lower left corner of the palm rest is an icon indicating where users fushitsu akku can transfer data wirelessly using TransferJet (more on this later).

The keyboard, of course, has an island-style layout, something Sony was known for long dell battery before other PC makers jumped on board and started ditching those pillowy, closely arranged keys. Below the thick speaker strip (but above the toshiba battery keyboard) you’ll find multimedia keys, as well as buttons to launch Sony’s VAIO Care and Media Gallery software. The glowing green power button is still built into the side of the hinge, which is an saus battery attractive touch.

When we watched Blu-rays on the Envy 17 3D, we were impressed by the level of detail. As promised, sony battery the display was bright, too, and the colors were true. We were also able to watch movies comfortably from the sides and even with the lid pushed far forward, but that apple battery required us to dim the lights; with the lights on, the display was too reflective to watch at wide angles. We also wish HP included skip buttons on the acer battery keyboard; if you want to skip chapters in a DVD or Blu-ray, you have to use the touchpad and touch buttons.

The Envy 17 3D's speakers, which are tucked discreetly onto the front lip of the notebook, are powered by Beats audio fushitsu akku technology. When listening to music or playing games, we were impressed with the fidelity and power of the speakers. Not only were sounds crisp and hp akku bright, but there was plenty of low-end bass, too. We liked that you can also tweak equalizer settings using the Beats audio control dell akku panel.

At 6.6 pounds and 15.3 x 10.4 x 1.6 inches, the VAIO F saus akku is still light enough to carry around the house with ease.
