Autopsy on the Panasonic Toughbook S9

Keyboard and Touchpad

In order to make room for the laptop's unique flip-up DVD burner, the ToughBook S9's keyboard occupies less than half the length of its deck. As a result, the keys are small, short,Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery and quite close together. You'll have to adjust to this layout. Even so, the keys have substantial travel and provide a pleasing soft click. There's also no flex at all.

The S9's circular touchpad (1.8 inches in diameter) is definitely a departure from the rectangular ones we typically see, but it functions as advertised. While it doesn't support fancy multitouch gestures like many other laptops, it will allow smooth circular scrolling within documents Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery and web pages. Cursor movement was also responsive. The notebook's two discrete mouse buttons are small but easy to press.

Durability

What you're really paying $2,649 for is what Panasonic calls business-rugged construction, meaning the Toughbook S9 is designed to withstand the typical abuse laptops can suffer in work environments or on the road. Basically, the S9 can take one or two nasty drops during its life span, specifically from a height of 2.5 feet (while powered)(Sony VGP-BPS13A/S Battery,Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery,Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery,Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery,Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery ) onto its base. The notebook should also be able to handle drops from 1 foot (while turned off) onto hard surfaces, hitting each of the notebook's corners.

Aside from the magnesium construction, the S9's LCD Sony VGP-BPS13B/B Battery and hard drive are built to absorb shocks using rubber pads and flexible connectors. In addition, the notebook can take 220 pounds of direct pressure on its lid. The keyboard is also spill-resistant. Lenovo ThinkPad laptops such as the X220 have features such as shock-mounted hard drives, magnesium-reinforced chassis, and spill-resistant keyboards, but they don't offer similar guarantees against drops.

To test the S9's toughness, we dropped the notebook once from a height of 2.5 feet (while powered) onto its base. We then placed a plank Sony VGP-BPS13S of plywood on the floor, powered down the laptop, and let the CF-S9 fall from a distance of 1 foot, impacting the plank from various angles. After that, we upped the ante by having a 210-pound person stand on the S9's lid with the plywood plank sitting in between, evenly distributing the weight. According to Panasonic, these pressure tests simulate everyday occurrences such as a laptop being crushed in overhead bins or sat on accidentally. Lastly, we poured 6 ounces of water on the notebook's keyboard, let it sit for a few minutes, then drained the water as best we could. Impressively, the ToughBook S9 ran this gauntlet with no discernible damage Sony VGP-BPS13/S or impaired operation.

Besides durability, Panasonic offers a few security features on the ToughBook S9. These include a TPM security chip to help protect passwords from software threats Sony VGP-BPS13B/S and an optional fingerprint reader for biometeric authentication. There's also a Computrace Agent in the system BIOS to help locate the laptop if it's misplaced or stolen.

Design

Weighing just 3 pounds, the ToughBook S9 is easy to take anywhere. The 12.1-inch laptop certainly has a very compact footprint (12.8 x 9.9 inches), but at almost two inches thick at its widest point, it's a bit chunky. The S9 has a sturdy magnesium alloy chassis, Sony VGP-BPS13AS and we like the black-and-sliver lid. The laptop's interior is a solid metallic silver color, complete with Panasonic's trademark circular touchpad and a flip-open DVD burner hidden in the laptop's right wrist rest.

Heat

For the most part, the ToughBook S9 stayed fairly cool. After playing a Hulu video for 15 minutes, we recorded a temperature Sony VGP-BPS22A Battery of 89 degrees Fahrenheit at the center of the keyboard. The touchpad returned a reading of 93 degrees, while the notebook's underside was 92 degrees. However, the left wrist rest crossed the threshold of what we consider uncomfortable (95 degrees), measuring 103 degrees.

Low Limits, High Costs for Bandwidth

Just this week, AT&T announced that its DSL customers would have to abide by a 150GB per month cap or pay a $10 penalty for each additional 50GB of transfers. While that sounds like a lot of data at first glance, it only accounts for about 3 hours a day of HD video viewing, as watching a typical two-hour HD movie on Netflix uses about 3.6GB. And that’s before you do a full online backup of your 320GB hard drive, call the family on Skype HD, check your e-mail, surf the web, hp presario cq72 battery and download that new 5GB MMO you’ve been dying to play.

Those numbers loom a lot larger on mobile broadband where the caps are far lower. For example, Verizon Wireless charges $50 a month for just 5GB on its LTE data plan or $80 for 10GB. T-Mobile just announced an $85 for 10GB per month plan for its 4G network . If you exceed those rates, T-Mobile slows your connection, hp cq72 battery and Verizon charges you a whopping $10 per GB overage fee. When it comes to handsets, Verizon still has a $30 unlimited data plan, but has promised to end it in the near future. Clear hp envy 17 battery and Sprint are the only carriers who offer truly unlimited 4G bandwidth for both handset and notebook users, but you have to wonder how long they will continue that pricing plan when all of their competitors are instituting caps.No More Casual TV Viewing

No matter what the size of your data cap, you now have to think carefully about everything you watch online. If you’re a home user, even a high cap means you simply cannot cut the cable cord unless you don’t watch that much television. g72 battery And there’s little chance you’ll choose to eat up your bandwidth allotment watching a program unless you really want to give it your full attention.

The fear of exceeding bandwidth limits could fundamentally change the way we think about TV viewing. Many people, myself included, like to have TV on in the background while they’re doing something else. There are many shows and even entire channels that I’ll watch out of the corner of my eye while I’m working on my computer, but I’d never stop what I was doing g62 battery and give my undivided attention for a full two hours. Would you pay $10 per GB in overage fees to watch an episode of Cops, three hours of senate debate on CSPAN, or the full two hours of Mansquito? Would you even use 2 or 3 percent of your monthly home broadband allotment on an hour or two of those shows?

Just think about the chilling effect that cautious viewers could have on programming if the unlimited world of cable hp presario cq62 battery and satellite were replaced with metered Internet programming. Would anyone even produce cheesy reality shows such as Hoarders or straight-to-tape movies such as Dolph Lundgren’s Killing Machine if people had to think twice about paying the bandwidth charges to watch them? Or would everyone start watching things in standard def, just to save gigabytes?

How to Stop the Caps

While the FCC’s authority to regulate net neutrality issues such as the Comcast vs. Level 3 dispute is in question, there’s no form of consumer protection against broadband caps hp presario cq42 battery and overage fees. However, there’s always the court of public opinion, and that’s where we all need to change the way we talk about bandwidth caps.

Too many times, journalists who write about this issue parrot broadband industry talking points by calling users “data hogs” for taking full advantage EliteBook 2530P Battery of “all-you-can-eat” Internet services. Unfortunately, as Jesse Brown of Macleans notes, today’s typical usage patterns were yesterday’s excesses.

If we can change the conversation from one which insults consumers to one which empowers them, we can change the stakes of the game Pavilion DM4 Battery and encourage providers to offer the best and cheapest bandwidth instead of trying to take a piece of the action at every turn. The stakes for the future of entertainment, computing, and commerce are much too high to just let this slide.

The Atom Z670,VGP-BPS9/S

With iPad users getting their music fix from iTunes VGP-BPS9/S and Android possibly getting a music update in the near future, Blackberry’s PlayBook seemed to have nowhere to turn to for music and media. However, thanks to a new partnership with 7Digital, the PlayBook tablet will come preloaded with access to the online store and numerous titles and albums.

According to a press release by RIM, the 7Digital music store will come pre-installed with all PlayBooks VGP-BPS9/B and will allow access to DRM-free music. The 7Digital store features more than 13 million songs that are available in high quality formats (320kbps) and will be available on the PlayBook at the same price as their online website.

Another feature announced by RIM, is the presence of a PlayBook podcast app that will allows users to download audio VGP-BPS9 and HD video podcasts. The podcasts have been for the most part a feature of Apple and iTunes, and the new PlayBook app could prove to be an appealing alternative. Both the podcast and music app were previewed on Blackberry’s YouTube channel (video featured below) and seem to look VGP-BPS9A/B and work nicely.

The PlayBook features a 7” LCD with 1024x600 pixel resolution, a 1GHz Dual-Core TI OMAP processor, 1GB RAM, a 5MP rear-facing camera VGP-BPS13 and comes with Blackberry’s custom tablet OS. Both the tablet and accompanying music and podcast apps should be available for preview at South by Southwest this week in Austin, Texas.

Get your browsers VGP-BPS13a/s and refresh buttons ready; Apple will officially begin iPad 2 preorders with free shipping through its online Apple Store tomorrow March 11th at 1AM pacific standard time.

If brick-and-mortar shopping is preferred, customers can begin purchasing VGP-BPS13a/b and getting hands-on experience with Apple’s latest tablet at 5PM the same day. Besides the Apple Store, other retail chains will also be carrying the new iPad, including AT&T, Verizon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart.

Last week, Apple announced the iPad 2 at an event in San Francisco Akku Dell Vostro 1000 and quickly slashed prices on all first gen iPad models by at least $100 in an attempt to clear stock. Any shortages of the new iPad is not expected to last long as Apple will reportedly ship around 40 million units by the end of this year.

For a processor designed around ultra-low Akku Dell Latitude E5510 voltage use, the Intel Atom Z670 won’t be coming cheap for manufacturers according to a Fudzilla report. The Oak Trail processor is expected to cost $75 at launch, making it more expensive than any previously released Atom CPU.

In comparison, Nvidia’s competitive Tegra 2 platform is reportedly as low as $20 USD per chipset, almost three times cheaper than the new Intel Atom. This is likely due to the core architectural difference between the processors, as the Tegra series is based off of ARM’s Cortex –A9 core while the Atom uses the more traditional Akku Dell Latitude E5410 x86 design.

The steep price of the Z670 could mean tablet manufacturers may prefer producing Tegra-based products over using the Atom. In turn, there would be more Tegra tablets running Google’s Android compared to Atom-based tablets, which would be an unwanted outcome for Intel in general. Intel would need to cut the production costs of the new Atom quickly if the company wishes to compete with Nvidia VGP-BPS13/q and Qualcomm.

The Atom Z670 will be a single-core CPU with a low 3W thermal design power. The processor will be featured in a number of upcoming tablets such as the Samsung Slide 7 Akku Dell Latitude E4310 and the Fujitsu Stylisitic Q550.

The recent Sendai earthquake measuring about 8.9 on the Richter scale Akku Dell Latitude E6510 and the subsequent massive tsunami have unfortunately left its mark on some of Japan’s major electronics factories.

Sony could be one of the hardest hit tech companies, as TechEye is reporting evacuations from up to six factories in Northeastern Japan. These facilities were responsible for manufacturing laser diodes found in laptop Akku Dell Latitude E6410 and computer disc drives. Sony will be looking at the affects of the outages and damages before considering the next appropriate action, a company spokesperson told Business Week.

Similarly, Toshiba, Sharp, Sanyo Akku Dell Latitude E6500 and Panasonic have halted production in a number of factories according to ComputerWeekly. Toshiba in particular had to close down a plant responsible for making microcontrollers and its NAND Flash production factory could possibly be affected. The company supplies a major percentage of the NAND memory chips used in worldwide consumer electronics, including the Apple iPad, and LSE claims that prices for these flash chips could jump due to the impact of the tsunami.

“Japan produces around 20-25% of world silicon chip production,” says semiconductor analyst Malcolm Penn. Toshiba Akku Dell Latitude E6400 and SanDisk can account for half of the world’s NAND Flash assembly, a technology that is currently high in demand this year due in part by the rise of tablets and solid state drives.

Although such production disruptions and resulting market price increases have happened in the past, companies are still assessing the damage done by the Sendai earthquake on the overall electronics supply chain. Industry analysts from iSuppli predict disruption in worldwide semiconductor supplies during the next two weeks, based on preliminary assessment.

Hopefully, Japan will make a swift recovery as it continues to gain financial Akku Dell Latitude E5400 and personnel support from around the world. Expect more news to come as the dust clears and situation improves.

Do you know the case of the Aspire 5253

The case of the Aspire 5253 is suited for mobile use. Hands feel good on the matte and structured surface. Fingerprints don't stand a chance. The only weak spot is the black reflective display frame, which is prone to scratching (see Webcam photo).(VGP-BPS9/S ,VGP-BPS9/B,VGP-BPS9A/B,VGP-BPS9 )

The case is stable and gives a durable impression. We were only able to bend the base unit marginally with VGP-BPS13 both hands. The base of the keyboard does however give way with VGP-BPS13A/B a little pressure on the left side. The lid could only be bent a small amount, but the rigid and the grippy surface give a stable impression. The grippy structure once again provides for good daily suitability, even without a Notebook bag.

The hinges hold the display in place very well, vgp-bps13b/q without any teetering. They are rigid, and hence two hands are required to open the display. The hinges themselves are firmly attached to the rest of the chassis. The maximum opening angle for use on the lap is more than enough, and is about 160 degrees.

Input Devices

Keyboard

The keys have a clear pressure point and a medium key travel. Depending on the position the end stop is however a little on the soft side (left and right), or firm (middle). The keys clearly give way on the left and right sides, which provides for a bouncy typing sensation. The arrow keys are only half the size Latitude D420 Battery of normal letter keys, but at least separated by a small space from the shift key. This makes "blind" operation easier.

Touchpad

The mouse replacement is an Elan-Smart pad. Its surface is smooth and can be operated easily and accurately. The touch-surface has markings for a vertical scroll bar.

The keys give a relatively loud clicking sound, although this is quite muffled. The pressure point doesn't require much force, vgp-bps13s and gives good feedback. Altogether the pad is sensitive up to the edges and makes a good impression, although the button travel is too short and the buttons are too deep in a depression, for the perfect office touchpad.

Performance

Acer has equipped its 15.6 inch Notebook vgp-bps13a/q with the dual core APU AMD E-350 (2 x 1.6 GHz). This Accelerated Processing Unit with a TDP of 18 Watts contains an integrated graphics unit with DirectX-11 and UVD3 Video Decoder for decoding HD videos (MPEG-2, H.264, VC-1). The APU E-350 uses the HD 6310. With 80 shaders and the aforementioned UVD3 video processor the GPU races ahead of the current Intel HD, and should be on a similar performance level as the Nvidia Ion.

The CPU merely has an L2 cache of 1.024 KB. The APU sits on the AMD A50M chipset, and is supported by 2.048 MBs vgp-bps13/s of DDR3 RAM. For the best possible utilization of the 64-bit APU, 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium is included.

When it comes to the processor benchmarks we compared the AMD E-350 (2 x 1.6 GHz) vgp-bps13/b with Intels current Atom dual core processors, which can be found in the same price class and also target mobility. Parallel multitasking operations can be processed on two cores. In the multi-core benchmark Cinebench R10 32-bit the tested system achieves 1.957 points. An Atom N550 achieved 1.463 points. N455/N450 only reach 840 (Acer One 533-13Drr) and 938 points (Asus Eee PC 1008P). The N550 is 30% slower on average. The AMD Fusion APU C-50 (Toshiba NB550D) cannot keep up in this case, it falls behind by 35 percent vgp-bps13/q with 1.271 points in Cinebench R10 multi 32-bit.

When it comes to single core processing in the Cinebench R10 single 64-bit benchmark, the E-350 only achieves 1.125 points. Compared to the faster clocking Pentium P6100 (2.584) or the Pentium Dual Core T4500 (2.447), 1.6 GHz don't stand a chance. They do however against the Atom N550, which just about manages to achieve 512 points. The AMD Fusion APU C-50 (not 64-bit test) manages to achieve 634 points (-66%) in the single core benchmark.(vgp-bps13a/s,vgp-bps13as,vgp-bps13b/b,vgp-bps13b/s)

Gaming Performance

In the 3DMark2005 benchmark the tested system achieves 3.588 points. With this the Radeon HD 6310 only lies 12% behind the GeForce 9400M GeForceBoost (Ion2) VGP-BPS10 with 4.075 points. It does not even come close to dedicated entry level GPUs such as the HD 5470 (+55%) though. The HD 6250 that is used in the Fusion Netbooks (AMD C-50), shows itself to be 19% slower. For this result we used 3DMark2006 (1280 x 1024). The result: 1.987 points vs 1.710 points.

Looking at the scores from 3DMark06 results in the following order of HD Netbooks and our Fusion Notebook: The Pavilion dm1-3180 (E-350) is on the same level pa3535u-1brs with 1.982 points. The Asus Lamborghini VX6 (Atom Dual Core D525, Ion2) beats both without difficulty (2.397). The AMD based Aspire One 521 (1.046) and the Asus Eee PC 1015PN (1.155) fall behind. The smaller C-50 sister in the Toshiba NB550D (1.448) also has to get to the back.

For the sake of completeness we also completed the DirectX-11 benchmarks. The performance score from 3DMark 11 lies at 277 points (NB550D: 188 points). Unigine Heaven finishes PA3534U-1BRS with 1.2 fps (NB550D: not completed).

In short: On a small scale the 3D performance of our 15.6 inch Notebooks can keep up compared to the Atom-N550 and the Nvidia Ion. Compared to entry level GPUs such as the Geforce 310M (Lenovo B560, 3.114 points) the Fusion doesn't stand a chance though. The following three game tests remain vgp-bps21/s without commentary since the low fps values show the meager gaming performance.

the 8GB SanDisk Ultra Backup,Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery

At 0.48 ounces, the 8GB SanDisk Ultra Backup is the lightest of the USB drives we recently Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery tested. It's also the least stylish; its all-black design looks a bit dated. At 2.9 inches long, the Ultra Backup stuck out a full finger's width longer than the Lexar MX drive, making it a little more obtrusive when connected to a laptop. Still, it's about the same length as the Patriot Memory Supersonic.

Even if the Ultra Backup looks a bit staid, it has a unique backup button on top that worked remarkably well. Also, an activity light on the drive helps you see what is happening; during backup or file transfer, the light flashes quickly. In a ready state, the light stays Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery steady.
Backup Software

The Ultra Backup comes with same Dmailer app that comes with the Lexar MX drive, but it worked well and setup only took five minutes. While you can set the app to automatically back up files, you can also just press the backup button on the drive; it's so easy that you may find yourself clicking the backup button even as you work, Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery saving the latest version of a Word doc or a recent iTunes download.

One of the unspoken truths of computing is that even power users often forget to do backups Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery on the road. Yet it only takes one crash to lose your Word documents, photos, music collection, movies, and other locally stored files. The SanDisk Ultra Backup makes this process so easy that you might decide it's time to stop taking your chances.
Design

Performance

Unfortunately, the SanDisk Ultra Backup was the slowest drive Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery of the bunch when it came to copying large amounts of files. When we transferred 5GB of media files and Word documents to the drive, it took a long 8 minutes 41 seconds, which equals a write speed of just 9.8 MBps. That's two and a half minutes longer than the next slowest drive, the Lexar Echo MX (6:08, 13.9 MBps). If you're looking for fast transfers, the USB 3.0-powered Patriot Memory Supersonic blows all of these drives away with a write speed of 41.3 MBps.

Likewise, copying those same files from the SanDisk to a notebook took 4:45 (a read speed of 18 MBps), about 40 seconds Sony VGP-BPS13A/Q Battery longer than the next slowest drive, the Imation Defender F200 (4:07, 20.7 MBps). The Patriot Memory drive took just 55 seconds, a rate of 93.1 MBps.
Pricing

The Lexar Echo MX is one of the more innovative USB drives we've tested. The main reason: There is a Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery small gauge that shows the capacity level, even when the 128GB device is not plugged in. An included backup program, free 2GB of online storage, and speedy operation make the pricey Echo MX ($500) an option worth considering for those who need a lot of capacity in a tiny package. Read on to find out how this drive Sony VGP-BPS13/B Battery performs.
Design

Measuring just 2.6 inches long, the Echo MX is the smallest drive we tested, but we had to wonder Sony VGP-BPS13B/B Battery about its construction. When the idea is to rely on this drive for backups, you want to make sure it holds up to abuse. Weighing 0.96 ounces, the MX's all-black plastic build felt a bit cheap compared to the Patriot Memory Supersonic and the Imation Defender F200, both of which have metal cases. A thin strip along the top that looks like an E Ink display fills up as you load the Echo MX with your files, which helps this drive stand out.
Backup Software

Not only does the 8GB SanDisk Drive offer a relatively Sony VGP-BPS13B/Q Battery small amount of storage space, but it also doesn't offer the best value. The 8GB version we tested normally retails for $45, but was on sale for $30. That's $3.75 per GB, which isn't bad, but the Patriot Memory drive costs $210 for 64GB, which comes to $3.30 per GB. SanDisk also offers the drive in a 64GB capacity for $202, which gives you the best value. There are also 16GB ($75) and 32GB ($113) versions available.
Verdict

While its transfer speeds aren't great, we love the simplicity of copying files to the SanDisk Ultra Backup. Sony VGP-BPS13A/S Battery Sometimes, that's all that matters.

The Echo MX drive includes the same Dmailer backup program that comes with the SanDisk Ultra Backup USB drive. Setting up the drive took less than five minutes, since the software is so easy to install and configure. The software has 128-bit AES encryption and automatically backs up Sony VGP-BPS13/Q Battery files.

There is one extra step with the Echo MX, since you have to create an account on the Dmailer service for online backups. While this OEM service has its own website (www.dmailer.com), you can't login directly from its website; you have to go through the backup app. That means Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery you can't check your online backup from any computer unless you install Echo Backup first. The 2GB of online backup is free, but a more useful capacity of 30GB costs $35 per year.

The main issue we had with the Lexar Echo MX was not the speed or software, but the price. The 128GB drive we tested costs $500--$3.90 per GB--but the 8GB version is also a bit expensive, at $45. (The Echo MX is also available in 16, 32, and 64GB capacities.) By comparison, the 64GB Patriot Memory Supersonic costs $210, Sony VGP-BPS8A Battery which is just $3.30 per GB.
Verdict

We like the Lexar Echo MX's read and write speeds, its intuitive backup software, and 2GB of online storage. However, for the amount of money the Echo MX costs, we wish it felt more durable. Still, its fuel gauge is a decided benefit to anyone who wants to know at a glance just how much free space they Sony VGP-BPS21A/B Battery have.

Performance

Among the USB 2.0 thumb drives we tested, the Lexar Echo MX Sony VGP-BPS21/S Battery drive was one of the fastest. Copying 5GB of files (including a 2GB HD movie) to the drive took 6 minutes 8 seconds, a rate of 13.9 MBps. That's about 20 seconds slower than the Imation Defender F200 (14.8MBps) but more than two minutes faster than the SanDisk Ultra Backup (9.8 MBps).

Copying the files back to our laptop took 3 minutes 30 seconds, a rate of 24.4MBps, which beat out the SanDisk (18MBps) and the Imation (20.7MBps) by a fair margin. Still, it took the USB 3.0-enabled Patriot Memory Supersonic drive just 2:04 to write those files, and just 55 seconds to pull them Sony VGP-BPS21 Battery off.
